My Mama Has Fibromyalgia

As my children get older (my eldest are 9 and 6) they are noticing more details about my health. They have more questions. I wrote this book as a way to share some detail with them, at a level they could understand.

Highlighting and defining key words, sharing what they can do to help mama, what mama experiences and more. The key message of this book is that no matter what mama experiences in her body, she always loves her children.

This book is part explanation for children and part advocacy. Let’s raise a generation of inclusive children.

It has helped them to understand what I experience.

But what I didn’t expect was how I would feel hearing them read the words – what I experience. And the thoughtful questions they are asking as a result.

Key Questions

What age range is it for?

I think it will be best understood by children ages 6-12. However it does depend on your child’s comprehension and willingness to engage and ask questions. My 2.5 and 5 year olds enjoyed reading it with my older two.

Is this non-fiction?

Yes, this is an educational book. I define words such as chronic, diagnose, and flare up. The book shares symptoms, treatments and ways to manage fibromyalgia as a family – in child-friendly terms.

Where can I get it?

You can purchase physical copies from Lulu or Amazon.

From Lulu as an 8.5 x 8.5 in hardcover book

From Lulu as US Letter 8.5 x 11 in, hardcover, in a format more like an older child’s reader from school

Are you working on other children’s books?

Yes! I am working on My Mama Has Chronic Pain and My Mama Has ME/CFS. They will be available in 2024.

Why did you write this book?

As a person who’s experienced chronic pain and fatigue for many years, I know the lack of understanding that exists. When my children started noticing that I was a bit different from other mamas, I knew I needed to be able to explain it well. My 9.5 and 7 year olds are bright and inquisitive children, so I knew I needed some detail in there.
